Intersectionality

Just as old age has been largely absent from feminist scholarship and, conversely, feminist scholarship from gerontology, so has intersectionality been missing from gerontological research. In addressing the lack of work on intersectionality within the social sciences – to include gerontology, Calasanti and King (2015) point to the willingness of researchers to discuss differences in demographic characteristics (e.g. age, gender, race and sexuality) but not to the interactions among systems of inequality. Calasanti and Kiecolt (2012) define systems of inequality as ‘a relationship of privilege and oppression based on group membership’ (p. 265). These often invisible systems are embedded within institutions such that enactments of oppression and privilege seem ‘natural’. An example is women’s informal care work, which has been viewed as ‘natural’ and has also been primarily examined through heterosexual, married women’s experiences (Zajicek, Calasanti, Ginther, & Summers, 2006). It is therefore important to carefully consider how complex systems and multiple oppressions and privileges operate in the context of age identity to include assumptions about ‘motherhood status’; lifetime access to opportunities to include marriage and paid labour; ageism; and others.
